It's been around 35 degrees Celsius the last few days... that's pushing 90 F. I just went out and bought a fan. Here on the seventh floor, things have been getting a little hot. It's hottest in the morning in the main room, which has the east-facing window, and right about this time (8pm) in my kitchen, where there's a west-facing window. That does put a damper on dinner plans, somewhat. It's light now until after 10. At 9 the sun is still above the horizon, and actually can still be quite bright and hot. So even with the late European dinner time, I'm still not wild about the idea of turning on the oven.
It's nice to have so much light, though! It does tend to make one stay out later than one expects, though.
The other thing going on lately is the World Cup. Heard of it? Big soccer tournament. Happens every 4 years. (By the way, the USA team made it to the tournament, but just lost their first game this evening to the Czech Republic.) It's a big, big deal here. Imagine if the Superbowl lasted a month, with three games a day until the last week or so.
Every other bar has a wide screen TV tuned to the World Cup. And I've walked past several old TVs and new TV boxes on the curb with the trash, throughout the city. When someone with a large expat population wins a game, you can sometimes hear it, in the form of cars honking and so forth. JD and I happened to walk past a Dutch bar (yes, there evidently is such a thing) in the 4th, after the Dutch won their game the other day, and people wearing orange, the team color, were enjoying their Amstels (or whatever) in the street.
Tomorrow evening France has its first game. I've been hearing a lot about how France won the World Cup eight years ago, and about how important le foot is, but I still need to learn how the "Allez, les bleus!" chant goes. I'm not a big sports fan, but I do like a good party, and the Coupe du Monde is pretty festive.
