Just because they can
I'm working at the Café Français, and the firefighters seem to be on strike today, because they're all gathering in the Place de la Bastille, climbing up the base of the colonne, and so on. Amusingly, they have lots of flares and firecrackers. I guess it's very easy to get approval for the use of incendiary materials for a manifestation when you're the fire department.

The protest is about the amount of money they make (which is really low) and their pensions when they retire.
