The perils of epenthesis

JD and I were at a café today, minding our own business, when someone asked the waiter about the desserts. He pointed out each of the tarts in the window case, and then said, "et des glaces" ("and some ice cream (flavors)"), pointing at the list of flavors.

Thing is, not being a native speaker of French, he didn't exactly say des glaces. Evidently his native language was one of those languages where consonant clusters such as /gl/ are not permitted. So he had to insert a vowel (this is called epenthesis) between the /g/ and the /l/. Which made the whole thing sound a lot like dégueulasse, that is, 'disgusting'.

JD confirmed that it sounded like that to him too, so it wasn't just my English-speaking ears. Anyway, I was eating some of les glaces at the time, and can confirm that they were not at all disgusting. I might have to do more research, however, to really make sure that none of the flavors are disgusting. I'll let you know.
