Faut que je moove

The time has come for me to shuffle off these six flights of stairs I've been walking up and down (but mostly, it seems, up) every #$&*%$ day for the last three years.

That's right, next month I'm moving from my fourth-arrondissement sixth-floor chambre de bonne, in order to rent a room from a friend in her sixteenth-arrondissement fourth-floor apartment with what I think has to be the most wonderful elevator in Paris, because it is the elevator that will save me my daily horrible vertical trudge.

My friend Ju is lovely and I am looking forward to moving in with her. She does have a white, fluffy cat, and I have a white-fluffy-cat allergy. But everything else about the situation is so perfect. Living with company instead of alone. Living a one-seat ride on from work instead of the two-seat ride I now "enjoy". Having a dishwasher, a dryer, a real kitchen, even a bathtub!

So we'll just keep my room cat-free and I'll take pills if I need to. I have an idea that I will become less allergic, though I might just be making that one up.

I will miss the Marais. I'll miss being able to walk to good cheesecake and falafel. And despite the six flights, I will miss my cute little apartment under the roof with the red tiles and the yellow curtain. I gotta move, though. And my new apartment is closer to the Eiffel Tower, which should be a big talking point for my visits to the states.

(Oh yeah, the title... it means "I gotta move" - yes, that's moove, an English borrowing - and I yoinked it from the song C'est Comme Ça by Les Ritas Mitsouko.)

Where's the awesome cheesecake?
I've missed awesome cheesecake since I left the US three years ago.

I don't know which part of the 16th you will find yourself in, but I love it here. It's known as the 'posh but boring' district, but I prefer it to being more centrally placed. You can walk to the Eiffel Tower, or nip down the road on a 52 bus to Bois de Boulogne or Parc Saint Cloud and escape the city almost altogether. There's some nice places to eat, some interesting architecture and plenty of history. You're lucky to have a bath - something I miss since coming to France.

David, the awesome cheesecake, which comes in large sheets and in several flavors, is at the boulangerie Sacha Finkelsztajn in the rue des Rosiers. The shop is bright yellow, you can't miss it. My favorite flavor is lemon. Damn, now I want some lemon cheesecake.

Gavin, I'll be near La Muette. It's great to hear from a 16th-er. I really don't know the neighborhood much at all. Whereabouts are you?

I'm a couple of stops further down in Jasmin on avenue Mozart. My bank is up in La Muette, and I occasionally venture up to the shops there. There must be a big ex-pat American population that way as I'm always hearing the American accent when I'm over that way. Your friends will certainly have an easy stroll down to the Eiffel Tower, and I'm sure you're going to love the district once you get the chance to roam about and explore some more.

Thanks for the Cheesecake info.

There are a lot of American students around La Muette because, from what I know, this is where the NYU Parisian Study Abroad thing is and if it's like where my university is, they might share the building with other schools too.

Personally, I'm no big fan of the area, too high bourgeoisie for me, but eh... If you have a nice apartment, that's all that matters.

If you need some arms to move your stuff, I know two that are very conveniently attached to my body. Just give me a ring.

Gavin: Thanks for the info!

David: Sure thing! And yeah, the apartment is the important thing...

JD: Aw, thanks so much. You rock.

Oops, guess it's not good for me to be forgoing the stairs... and yet... somehow I still want to forgo them.

Hello, I hope the move goes well.

I just wanted to introduce myself. I've been revisiting your blog like a freaky stalker lately and wanted to make sure if you are reading stats that you are not scared :-)

I've been reading all about your journey in a higgeldy piggeldy fashion. I've enjoyed reading a well written blog by a 'New Parisian' that is not all about lipstick, shoes, and whining.'I take particular note of your language posts. I've been learning French for six whole weeks and hope I live long enough to hold a conversation in Paris one day.

I've started a blog of my own and have added you to my reading list. I hope you don't mind.
