Oops

Hi from home. Two weeks ago I had a cold, last week the flu, and then I flew home. Now it's full-on Christmas prep. I do hope to get back to blogging after that! I have some tidbits from Paris as well as some language thoughts to share with y'all.

In the meantime, let's enjoy some holiday schadenfreude at the expense of the New York Times, who published a letter purportedly from Betrand Delanoë, the mayor of Paris, only to find that it was a fake. They had received it by email and never verified that it was from him. I think I will be bringing this up the next time someone tells me that political blogs are crap and the traditional media is the last bastion of skilled journalism.

The letter does seem to have been written by a francophone, if the use of pretend in "What title has Ms. Kennedy to pretend to Hillary Clinton’s seat?" is any indication. Pretend to with the meaning 'aspire to, claim to be fit for' is possible but archaic in English, while for French prétendre à that meaning is commonplace.
