The other night when I was wandering around with Rm, we were in a newsstand kind of store, and there were these little kids there looking at toys in the glass cabinet, saying "C'est quoi? C'est quoi?" ('That's what? That's what?') Rm doesn't speak French, but linguists usually have a passing familiarity with the words for 'what' and other question words; anyway, I whispered to her excitedly that it was wh- in situ in the wild, and that was fun for us to share.
The other story was tonight at the Monop' where the cashier picked up my sweet potato and said "C'est quoi?" To be fair, I had found it in the exotic section along with the sugarcane and star fruit.
